Want to be a camp humane heroes camp counselor?

Serve as a Junior Camp Counselor at a youth humane education camp, assisting in the facilitation of engaging, educational, and hands-on activities that promote responsible pet care, compassion for animals, and teamwork among campers.

Work closely with camp staff to provide supervision, assist with animal interactions, and help foster a love for animals and humane education in young campers.

Camp Sessions 9am-12pm:
June 1st-5th CHS Shelter Explorers 7-9 year olds
June 15th-19th CHS Shelter Explorers 10-12 year olds
July 6-10th Paws at Work 7-9 year olds
July 20th-24th Paws at Work 10-12 year olds

Counselor Shift Times:
Monday-Friday 8:30am-12:30pm

Qualifications

Age: Must be at least 16 years old
Experience: None required, but previous experience working with kids, such as babysitting, tutoring, mentoring, or volunteering at youth programs preferred
Knowledge: Familiarity with caring for pets such as cats, dogs, and small critters
Physical: Ability to stand & walk for extended periods, ability to bend, kneel & reach
Time Commitment: Must be willing to commit to a full week long session
Must have reliable transportation
Must have access to personal email address

Positive Role Model: Demonstrates kindness, patience, and respect toward campers, animals, and staff.
Strong Communication Skills: Comfortable speaking to groups and leading activities in a positive, engaging manner. ust consistently follow verbal/written instructions
Comfortable Around Animals: Must be able to safely interact with dogs, cats, and small critters without excessive allergies or fear.

Conditions

Noise Levels: The shelter environment can be loud, especially in the dog kennel area, where barking and whining may occur frequently.
Temperature Variability: While the shelter is usually climate-controlled, some activities may take place outdoors or in non-air-conditioned areas where temperatures can fluctuate.
Pet Hair & Dander: Those with severe allergies should be prepared for constant exposure to pet hair, dander, and dust.
Biological Materials: Counselors may come into contact with animal waste (urine, feces), especially when assisting with cleaning tasks or handling small critters. Proper hygiene practices will be required.

Role Specific Duties

Supervise and assist campers during hands-on interactions with shelter animals, ensuring both camper and animal safety.
Lead and support small groups of campers in daily activities, ensuring engagement and participation.
Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating kindness, patience, and respect toward animals and campers.
Assist with behavior management by encouraging positive interactions and conflict resolution.
Guide campers through hands-on learning experiences, including craft projects, presentations, and guest speaker sessions.
Assist with daily setup and cleanup of camp activities, supplies, and animal areas.
Escort campers to different locations within the shelter, ensuring they stay with the group.
Ensure adherence to shelter and camp safety policies, including proper hygiene after animal interactions.

Application Period: Open from April 17- May 12 2026

Phone Interviews: A staff member will contact all applicants via email to arrange a short phone interview between May 12 and May 15

Offer Letters: Official offer letters will be sent via email to accepted applicants during the week of May 18

Orientation & Training: All Junior Camp Counselors must attend a mandatory orientation and training at Pieloch Pet Adoption Center during the week of May 26 2026
